A Machine Room Less (MRL) elevator is a modern type of traction elevator that fundamentally eliminates the need for a separate, dedicated machine room (typically located above the hoistway). This is achieved by integrating the compact motor, drive system, and control unit directly into the elevator shaft (hoistway), usually at the top.

The core concept is saving space by placing the machinery within the hoistway. This is a major advantage for building design and maximizing usable floor area.

MRLs typically use a gearless traction machine (often with Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors or PMSM) and a system of ropes or belts with a counterweight. The gearless motor is compact and highly energy-efficient. The motor turns a drive sheave (pulley) over which the ropes/belts pass, raising and lowering the elevator car and its counterweight.

The drive system is usually mounted inside the hoistway overhead (at the top of the shaft). The control panel is typically placed in a small cabinet near the top landing door or sometimes within the hoistway itself (with specific safety and access requirements).

MRL elevators often use significantly less energy (up to 30-80% less than some conventional or hydraulic systems) due to their gearless motor technology and the use of regenerative drives, which can feed excess energy (generated during braking or when the car is descending with a heavy load) back into the building's power grid.

They are an ideal solution for low to mid-rise buildings (up to about 25 stops or around 250 feet in height). They offer the high speed and ride quality associated with traditional traction elevators.
